Chapter One: Introduction
1.1 Background of the Study
Interfaith dialogue is essential for promoting peace, tolerance, and understanding among different religious communities. In Kano State, where both Islam and Christianity have significant followings, interfaith tensions occasionally arise, potentially disrupting the social fabric of the community. Local governments, as the closest level of governance to the people, have a vital role to play in fostering interfaith dialogue, ensuring harmony, and reducing religious conflicts.
This study aims to examine the role of the Kano Municipal Local Government Area (LGA) in fostering interfaith dialogue. By analyzing the local government’s initiatives, policies, and strategies for promoting religious tolerance and understanding, the study will contribute to the broader discourse on peacebuilding and interfaith cooperation in multi-religious societies.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Religious tensions in Kano Municipal LGA have occasionally led to conflicts that affect community cohesion and peace. Despite the potential of local government to mediate these tensions, the effectiveness of its efforts in promoting interfaith dialogue remains unclear. This study seeks to evaluate the initiatives taken by the local government to foster peaceful coexistence and examine the challenges in implementing successful interfaith programs.
